In this webinar, we will discuss how the use of RMST devices can influence speech, physical, occupational, recreational therapy goals in inpatient rehab including improved mobility, independence in ADLs, improved quality of life, and increased community participation. Respiratory muscle strength training devices are tools used to enhance speech, swallow and voice. The benefits of device use reach beyond these SLP-focused goals. Respiratory muscle strength training, incorporating inspiratory and expiratory exercises, improves maximum expiratory and inspiratory pressures as well as peak flow rates. Research has shown the transferable gains to endurance, mobility, transfer and ADL independence. At Sheltering Arms Institute, our SLPs share updates to device use and goals to the entire rehab team. Outcome measures are collected at serial intervals. Strategies to optimize collection and application of outcomes will be discussed. Results and translation by diagnostic category will be shared with participants. Tools for program development and education will be reviewed, as well as application of gains across rehab disciplines.
