This presentation will discuss complexities associated with tracheostomized patients and patients on mechanical ventilation. Early intervention protocols will be reviewed to help restore the physiology of the upper airway to its more “normal” state by returning airflow through the upper airway during exhalation. With the negative impact on swallow function in this patient population, it is estimated that 50-87% of patients with tracheostomy aspirate, including silent aspiration.
