Reflexive cough is a primary mechanism of pulmonary clearance. It is a brainstem mediated reflex, vital in clearing unwanted particles from the respiratory tract, therefore playing a major role in the prevention of dysphagia related pulmonary sequelae. Dr. Hegland will explore reflexive cough as it applies to the role of speech-language pathologists in the management of upper aerodigestive disorders.
