Respiratory muscle strength training (RMST) is well documented in the literature to support rehabilitation of oropharyngeal swallow safety and efficiency, cough strength, functional communication and tracheal progression. Despite the available literature to support use of RMST in diverse patient populations, translation of research into clinical practice can be impacted by barriers that prevent program development and result in a lag in provision of best practice to our patients. Implementing a structured knowledge translation framework can be beneficial during program development, implementation and monitoring of new clinical programs to support project success. This talk will outline the steps of the Knowledge to Action Cycle including how to: – Identify a problem that needs addressing – Identify, review, and select the knowledge or research relevant to the problem (e.g., practice guidelines or research findings) – Adapt the identified knowledge or research to the local context – Assess barriers to using the knowledge – Select, tailor, and implement interventions (i.e., implement the change) – Monitor knowledge use – Evaluate the outcomes of using the knowledge – Sustain ongoing knowledge use This framework is applicable to all domains of health care, but specific examples will be provided from our RMST program development at NYU Langone Health – Rusk Rehabilitation that can be adapted to your specific setting.
