APPLICATIONS OF RMST IN CRITICAL ILLNESS

APPLICATIONS OF RMST IN CRITICAL ILLNESS

Managing critically ill populations presents significant challenges. While advances in modern medicine have led to improved survival rates, they also bring increased complexity in rehabilitating common sequelae such as pulmonary and swallowing impairments. Dysphagia and dystussia in critically ill patients often stem from multifactorial causes, with neuromuscular weakness frequently identified as a key contributing factor. Despite the prevalence of these impairments, evidence-based guidance for dysphagia rehabilitation in this population remains limited. However, emerging research suggests that Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST) may offer a promising therapeutic approach.

This webinar will explore the potential applications of RMST in critical illness, presenting practical strategies for implementation and sharing insights from early research findings.

This webinar will be presented by Dr. Nicola Clayton. Nicola Clayton PhD, MScMed, BAppSc  is a Clinical Specialist Speech Pathologist at Concord Hospital in Sydney with over 25 years in experience in complex dysphagia management. She is also a clinical academic, completing her Master of Science in Medicine and PhD with focusses on respiratory disease and severe burn injury. She holds honorary affiliations with the University of Queensland, University of Sydney and is internationally recognised for her expertise, research, and education in the field of dysphagia, severe burn injury and critical care.
